There is always lots of thought and conversation surrounding the topic of worship. (Especially in my life since I’m a worship leader!) Usually these "worship" conversations are actually about the style of music rather than about what it means to worship God in spirit and truth. Many a church war has been waged over the style of worship.
Some hold to the belief that only traditional music should be allowed in church and making any adjustments just takes the reverence out of church. Others hold to the belief that the old way of worship is dull and stale and that the only way to reach anyone is to use modern music and focus on becoming "relevant".
The problem with categorically dismissing any one type of music is that there could be a group of people that feel as if they are being dismissed right along with it. Deciding how a worship service should be run at any particular church should be done only with much prayer and intentionality.
One term I heard recently is "convergent worship". I love that phrase. Instead of insisting on using only new things in worship and throwing out the old; instead of ignoring new trends and using only tradition; we look for the point where our traditions converge with the new. Maybe then we can set aside the worship wars and stop looking at what we got out of worship and start looking at what God got out of worship!
