Steps of Faith

‘Steps of Faith’ was actually the title of our very first message when we launched Morning Star Church in September of 1999.  The first worship song I ever attempted to write, this song was penned to complement the message that Sunday morning.

The lyrics are drawn from the familiar story of Peter in the boat… he sees a figure out on the water, and is comforted by Jesus’ voice identifying himself.  A challenge ensues in which Peter asks Jesus to invite him out onto the wather with him to prove that it’s really Jesus he sees.  Once Peter actually defies all laws of humanity and steps out of the boat, he finds himself the only other human ever to walk on water… and then it happens… Peter becomes nervous, concerned, worried.  The wind blows, and in his distraction, he takes his eyes off of Jesus.  He begins to sink.  This lesson is still a poignant one this very day, as we all find ourselves asking Jesus to help us in our lives at some point, only to eventually take our eyes off of him and wonder why we’re sinking.  ‘Steps of Faith’ serves as a simple prayer that God would constantly remind and assist us in keeping our eyes on Him, our minds on Him, and living our lives in Him.

After spending years in the regular rotation at MSC, Nathan Nockels and I stripped the song to its barest form before recording it for Every Reason Why and as we built it back up, it took on a whole new life.  The resurrected version of my very first worship song has since become an anthem of my own decision to follow God’s calling on my life with awe and trembling.

Lyrics:

STEPS OF FAITH

CCLI song #4387312

Verse 1

O, Lord help me to keep my eyes on You

O, Lord help me to keep my eyes on You

I can’t walk the path You’ve chosen on my own

O, Lord help me to keep my eyes on You

Chorus:

‘Cause I want to live like You lived

Love like You loved

Fill me with Your grace

I want to know Your glory

Lord, show me the way

Help me take these steps of faith

Verse 2

O, Lord help me to keep my mind on You

O, Lord help me to keep my mind on You

I can’t use the gifts you’ve given on my own

O, Lord help me to keep my mind on You

Verse 3

O, Lord help me to live my life in You

O, Lord help me to live my life in You

I can’t share the words You’ve spoken on my own

O, Lord help me to live my life in You
