This week was an interesting one for sure… we did something a bit different. We’ve been talking for the last three weeks (and will continue for several more) about being comfortable—more specifically, we’ve been challenging ourselves as Christians to be willing to get uncomfortable. Well, this week we were discussing how uncomfortable people get when churches talk about money. We called the message ‘Taboo’ because the money has almost become that in church. Anyway, we decided to put a little twist on the message, make a fake Taboo card (from the board game) and tell our pastor he couldn’t say any of the words on the card for the entire message. Good stuff. :) It gets better.
Ok, so before I forget, the worship setlist was as follows:
Transformed - Mark Roach / Matthew West
You’re Worthy of My Praise - David Ruis
Change Me - Gary & Rebecca Shoemaker
The Heart of Worship - Matt & Beth Redman
Everything seemed good to go on Saturday after a good run-through, and then one of those brutal tech-moments happened to launch the service. Our drummer, who operates the metronome, failed to plug his ears in all the way, so we started the first tune (Transformed) with a click track in everyone’s ears that the drummer couldn’t hear—not good. He turned it off after he realized it, but we still played the entire tune with a drummer who had nothing at all in his ears. Gotta love that stuff. We had a bit of a difficult time recovering from that on Saturday, but Sunday went much better.
The biggest challenge of the weekend was issued by my Pastor Mike Schreiner when we came up with this brilliant Taboo twist on the message. When faced with the prospect of writing an entire message about money without the use of the word money (and five other related words on the subject) he decided it would be fitting for me to write a song with the same limitations…
Truth is, I love doing this kind of stuff, and I was up for the challenge and I wrote a song for the services. It went over well, and I went ahead and posted it in case any of you ever find yourself in a similar predicament… it’s called "The Money Song (that never talks about money)" and it’s from the perspective of someone who doesn’t want to hear the word ‘money’ mentioned—ever—in church. Hope you enjoy.
So, that was my weekend… how was yours?
