The firstline of this song, "The earth is charged with Your great grandeur!"is a thought borrowed from the poem God’s Grandeur*by Gerard Manley Hopkins, that reads, "The world is charged with the grandeurof God." My very good friend and then co-leader of the Gathering, IsaacAnderson, believes Hopkins to be the Bono of Victorian poetry and will use anyand every opportunity to share his works. In the late winter of ‘06, Isaac preached one of the moststunning sermons I’ve ever heard on the beauty of God. I drove home from churchwith a head full of pictures and a determination to write my imaginations intoa melody I had been singing for weeks. The song would not leave me alone. Iwould wake up in the middle of the night and have to write, driving home fromwork I’d get an idea and come crashing through the front door to work on it.Even the second verse hit me while I was out walking the dog. After five daysof determined effort the song was completed, and the Gathering community sang,“You are Worthy,” the following weekend.
*God’s Grandeur [published 1918]: a poem byGerard Manley Hopkins [1844-1889]
You are Worthy [of Your Glory]
The earth is charged
With Yourgreat grandeur
The starsabove
Shine forYou
And the world belowResponds inwonder, God!
And we’re all lost in YouIn all You say and do
You are worthy of Your glory
God Almighty, You are Lord
Forever
You’re Robed in honor,
You’re Armed with Power
God forever, You are Lord
Forever
The waves resound
They pound Your praises
The flowers bloom
And stretch to You
Let everything
You’ve made now praise You, God!
Oh, Let all creation sing
Awake my soul and sing
Awake my soul and sing
Awake my soul and sing!
Let praise arise from my whole being!
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
You are Lord
Forever Lord!
